All summer you have heard talk about a Commitment Sunday coming one Sunday in September. Well, September is here and Commitment Sunday is not far away. In fact, September 16, 2007 has been set aside as Commitment Sunday for Athens Christian Church. It was a tremendous step of faith that the elders and deacons took last spring when they decided to begin making some of the much needed repairs around the church building. It was a step of faith because the financial resources simply were not there to pay for the repairs. In fact, if you were to look at the financial statements for the last couple of years you will find that regular income of the church is just keeping up with the regular expenses of the church. We have still been able to keep up a respectable missions program through our annual Faith Promise, but finances have been very close.
In order to finance the needed repairs taking place in Phase I of our project, your elders and deacons have discussed and decided on presenting the congregation with a challenge. If you believe in the mission of Athens Christian Church and you believe in the power of God to bless you financially, make a statement of faith by determining to help finance our building fund. Just like each member must do when our Missions Faith Promise rolls around, we are asking you to look at your present financial situation, pray about the needs of the church, pray about how God can use you to assist in the church’s situation, and then make a financial commitment to give according to how the Lord will bless you over the next 12 months. Do not take anything away from what you are currently giving to the general fund. Do not take anything away from what you are currently giving to our missions program. When you make a commitment, it needs to be out of an extra portion you want to give specifically for the purpose of meeting the needs of the building fund expenses. Your commitment is important even if it is only for an extra $5.00 or $10.00 per month.
Making a financial commitment on Commitment Sunday will do several things for each individual member of Athens Christian Church. First of all, it will say you believe in the power of God to work through Athens Christian Church to reach those who need the message of Jesus Christ the most. We have a tremendous message and a talented and capable team put together to get that message across to anyone God leads our way. It is time for us to step up our efforts for the kingdom. Second, it will say you have confidence in God that He will make it possible for you to bless the church in a financial way over the next 12 months. Who really knows what the next 12 months will hold? No one knows for sure – that is why it takes faith on our part to believe God will make a way for us to fulfill our commitment. Third, it will give you the satisfaction of knowing that you are doing your part within this local congregation. Not all of us can be preachers. Not all of us can be teachers. Not all of us can lead worship, or a youth program, or many of the other important jobs that are being done. But we all can do a job that is just as important as all these mentioned – we can pray for God’s blessings and we can give as He gives to us. Whether you make a financial commitment on Commitment Sunday or not will not determine your involvement in this special day. You can add our building fund to your daily prayer concerns.
What your elders and deacons are asking of you is no small feat. We realize it is no small feat financially nor is it a small feat spiritually. We believe, however, that every member of this congregation is up to the task. Please pray about your commitment to the Lord and your commitment to spreading the gospel through the efforts of Athens Christian Church and make a commitment on commitment Sunday, September 16, 2007.
